What makes a garden corner sofa large?

How much space does a large corner sofa need?

A big set always looks smaller in the photos than it does in your outdoor space. Mark the shape on the ground with string or masking tape, put a chair where the table goes and walk round it before you order.

1. Add up each side of the L. On the 860-096 modular sets, a run of a corner seat and two middle seats is about 1.9m (73 + 60 + 60cm). Set out three and three, the other side comes to roughly 2.6m once the depth of the corner seat is included.
2. Add the table. Coffee tables sit inside the L; leave about 40-45cm between the seat front and the table so you can reach a drink without stretching. A dining table needs space on its open sides for chairs or stools.
3. Leave a walkway. Keep at least 60cm, ideally 80cm, clear in front of the seats and at the open end of the L.
4. Check heights. Backs on this range run from 64cm on the 860-014 to 85cm on the 860-170. A high back can block a low window or sit above a fence line.

As a rough guide, a seven or eight-seater needs an area of about 3m by 3m with its table and walkway, and the bigger L-shapes nearer 3m by 3.5m. The 860-170's sofas alone cover about 2.05m by 2.7m before you add the 150cm fire table. L-shape, U-shape or two sofas?

Modular sets let you rearrange the seating. The 8-piece sets have two corner seats and four middle seats, so they make a long L, a shallow U with the footstool at the open end, or a straight row along a wall. Lounge or dining: choosing the table

The table matters more on a big garden corner sofa set than on a small one, because it decides whether the set is for drinks or for meals.

Lounge sets with a coffee table

The 8-piece modular sets have a low coffee table in matching weave, 32-39cm high, with deep seats (73-78cm) for lounging. They are ideal for evening drinks outdoors and conversation, less so for a plated dinner. Add a rattan sofa set armchair or two if you need extra seating on the day.

Outdoor corner dining sofas

For outdoor meals, choose a corner sofa set with a dining table. The 860-025 and 860-015 sets pair three sofa units with a 65cm-high glass dining table and a 34.5cm seat height, and the 860-373 has a 68cm table. The standout for big gatherings is the 860-295: its glass dining table extends from 177cm to 287cm, giving seating for ten, and the two armless chairs nest into the back of the sofa to save space, so no extra storage is needed. Fire pit sets

The Outsunny 860-170 swaps the coffee table for a 150 x 80cm gas fire pit table with a tempered glass wind guard, between two long sofas. Frames, weave and weight

Every set here uses PE rattan, a synthetic outdoor weave over a metal frame. Which? notes that natural wicker isn't weather resistant, which is why outdoor sets use resin weave instead. It won't rot or crack, and the UV-resistant finish holds its colour.

• Powder-coated or alloy steel - used on most sets here. Strong and good value, but heavier; touch up any chips in the coating to keep rust out.
• Aluminium - the 78cm-seat 8-piece sets, the 860-146 and the 860-170. Lighter for its size and it won't rust, which suits outdoor furniture left out in a wet British summer.
• Weave - the 860-014 uses 8mm strands where most budget sets use 6mm, so the weave keeps its shape longer.
• Seat ratings - from 110kg per seat on the corner dining sofas to 160kg on the 78cm-seat sets and 220kg per seat on the 860-146.

Big sets are heavy. The 860-295 weighs 108kg and the 860-170 112.6kg, and the 860-014 arrives in five packages on a pallet. Plan for two people to carry boxes from the kerb, and follow the HSE's manual handling advice on sharing heavy lifts. Cushions, comfort and the weather

Comfort on a garden corner sofa set comes down to cushion depth, seat depth and back height. Cushions run from 5-6cm on the corner dining sofas and the 860-373 to 10cm on the 860-014 and 860-146, and the 860-295 has 15cm back cushions. Deep 78cm seats on the larger 8-piece sets suit lounging with your feet up; the shallower 62cm seats on the dining sofas keep you upright at the table.

Covers zip off for washing on nearly every set, but the cushions are not waterproof. Bring them in when wet weather is forecast and for the winter, and keep the frame under a breathable outdoor cover. Caring for a large outdoor corner sofa set

1. Brush or vacuum leaves and grit out of the weave every few weeks.
2. In spring and autumn, wash the frame with warm soapy water and a soft brush, then let it dry fully.
3. Wash cushion covers by the label and dry them completely before zipping them back on.
4. Use a breathable cover between uses and over winter, and store cushions indoors or in a storage box.
5. Check bolts and clips each spring and tighten anything that has worked loose.
